Magazine Preview: Obama's young mother from abroad

Friends and family of Stanley Ann DunhamStanley Ann Dunham at the Borobudur in Indonesia, in the early 1970s.

The photo showed the son, but my eye moved it towards the mother. The first glimpse of stout, was surprisingly - pale skin woman in stable sandals, permanent square a half-step ahead which lithe, darker-skinned figure on their left side. Be body tailor-made discipline, even asceticism Elas-tic band. The appetite and the forces of the anatomical fate had ceded well padded area long ago on the joys their form. He had studied casualness a catalog model, in khaki, at home in the viewfinder. She met the camera head, dressed in hand indigo loomed a Silver Earring in the cascading curtain of dark hair textile colored, half hidden. She wore a few degrees higher than most of your chin. His right hand resting on her shoulder and easily. The photo on a rooftop in Manhattan in August 1987 taken and 20 years later, was sent by e-Mail to me a revelation and a mystery. The man was Barack Obama at 26, the organizer of Chicago on a visit to New York. Stanley Ann Dunham, his mother was the woman. It was not the similarities and differences between them stand out. It was impossible to make not the stereotype in question, she had reduced where appropriate: the white woman from Kansas.

Barack Obama with his mother in Hawaii.

The president's mother served as a series of useful simplifications. In the capsule version of Obama's life story is linked the white mother from Kansas alliteratively to the black father from Kenya. It is open, white bread, which is not always Kenya. In "Dreams from my father," which helped political ascent, memoirs, the power of Obama it is shy the girl, who falls head over heels for the brilliant, charismatic African who steals the show. It is the naive idealist, the innocent abroad in the next chapter. Obama's presidential campaign, she was the struggling single mother, who slipped away with their insurance for coverage as their lives food stamp recipients, that victims of wrong, argue in a health care system. And in the frenetic performances of the supermarket tabloid newspapers and the Internet, it is the atheist, the Marx-ist, the flower child, the mother, who abandoned her son or cheated a birth announcement for their Kenyan baby born the newspapers of the Hawaii in print, on the off chance, that he would be President one day.

The earthy figure on the photo fit those, not like me in the course of two and a half years of research, travel, and almost 200 interviews learn. Dunham described, such as a white woman from Kansas turns out to about as bright as describe her son as a politician, the like to golf. Intentionally or not, the label covers an extraordinary story - a girl with a young name in the years before the women's movement, which grew pill and the anti-war movement; married an African had at a time when nearly two dozen States have laws against interracial marriage; 24, moved, an anti-Communist massacre in which hundreds of thousands of Indonesians have been slaughtered to Jakarta with her son in the waning days; more than half of her adult life in a place hardly known, lived that most Americans, in the country with the largest Muslim population in the world; She worked for years in villages, where a Western woman was lone a rarity; in the study of blacksmithing, a craft long practiced dipped only by men; that brought up as a work and especially single mother, two biracial children; Who believed her son was in particular the potential to be great; that pulled him, as he jokingly, has made it a combination of Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi and Harry Belafonte, and then died in the 52, never know who or what would be it.

Obama placed the spirit of the father does not exist in the middle of his lyrical account of his life. Sometimes he has seemed more about grandparents say, helped him through his mother to collect. But they it shaped to a degree Obama has increasingly seemed to confirm. In the preface to the 2004 edition of "dreams from my father", spent nine years after the first edition and nine years after Dunham's death, Obama folded in a revealing admission: he knew his mother would her illness, does not survive, he could have - written another book "less a meditation on the absent parents"", more one who was the only constant in my life a who."

Dunham, for which a letter in Jakarta could raise her son in the United States their spirits for a whole day, surely wondered in his life about their place. In rare cases, they are supplied as to include much - to friends painfully, wistfully. But she would not have been inclined overstate their case. "When it with a dry humour tells him that seems downright Kansan, if nothing else, I gave you an interesting life."

Ann Dunham, that the name of Stanley in the emerging from childhood, was thrown overboard, that pregnant with the child a charismatic Kenyan was only 17 years old in the autumn of 1960 when she named Barack Hussein Obama, a fellow student at the University of Hawaii, which was more than six years older. She dropped out of school, married him and ended just before their Union. In the aftermath, she met Lolo Soetoro, a friendly, carefree, tennis graduate students from the Indonesian island of Java. They married in 1964, after Ann's divorce by came, but their early life together was upended by forces beyond their control. Sept. 30, 1965 were six Indonesian army generals and a Lieutenant kidnapped and killed in Jakarta, which the army as a coup attempt by the Communist party planned. Students study abroad, including Lolo, whose Studien were sponsored by the Government, soon summoned home. A year later in 1967, Ann graduated with a degree in anthropology, up 6-year-old child and moved to Indonesia, join to her husband.

The following four years were formative for mother and son - and are the subject of curiosity and today for many Americans speculate. That these were years in which Ann lived closely with the young Obama, which at the time was Barry; You impressed upon him their values and consciously and unconsciously, influenced his understanding of the world arise. To decisions about their own lives, if an example, in a sense Obama would eventually embrace, while otherwise it is deliberately left.

Janny Scott (jannyscott@gmail.com), a reporter for the New York Times, went on holiday in 2008 to write "A singular woman: the untold story of Barack Obama of mother," is adapted from which your article in this issue. Editor: Lauren core (l.kern-MagGroup@nytimes.com).

Q & A: Van Eck Global to go abroad with small-cap funds

By David Bogoslaw

Investing in small-cap stocks is a classic way to try to enjoy the early stages of economic recovery. The reasoning is simple: Small-caps tend to be more oriented towards national and less vulnerable economies with global economic trends than large firms. Investors are already doing, a great game U.S. small-caps - the Russell 2000 index hit a new record on 6 April, although it slipped slightly since. Now investors are more and more to be launched on the possibilities to invest in small-cap funds focus on foreign markets. One of the more recent arrivals: the Fund Market Vectors Russia Small - Cap Exchange - Traded (RSXJ) unveiled on 13 April.

The ETF is the fifth specific to each country or region specific Small-Cap Fund Van Eck Global has launched over the past two years. Rebound of the Russia of the financial crisis of 2008 has been slower than that of the emerging economies, but Van Eck sees encouraging signs for investors: credit expansion in progress, the beginning of the growth of real wages and a business climate sunny in Government promises to loosen restrictions on foreign investment. Other benefits include the need for an increase in infrastructure spending before the Russia hosts the 2018, World Cup, and General Electric (GE) entered into joint ventures with companies controlled by the State to produce equipment for energy systems and Russian health care. Bloomberg Businessweek spoke with Portfolio Manager Van Eck David Semple and Adam Phillips, General Manager of ETFs on the deployment and the general appeal of small-cap funds. The following is a transcript revised comments.

BBW: This is the second ETF small-cap that Van Eck was launched this month [the market vectors Germany Small-Cap ETF has become available April 4]. That could be considered as denier at a time when most strategists favour large cap for their greater exposure to the global economic recovery.

Adam Phillips: Van Eck was believed for a long time, is one of the best ways to capture exposure to an economy low capitalization of the stocks. Which is highlighted that come from different countries of the financial crisis at different speeds and for different reasons. Investors may or may not searching for names global mega-cap related to the global economy. They seek to their international equity allocations to capture compelling themes and stories in the emerging economies. And some of the BRICs [Brazil, Russia, India, China] come to mind. Some investors who want to be a little more tactical are more inclined to consider an ETF small cap which can provide more efficient access to a market given.

What convinced you that the time had come for an ETF small Russian capitalization?

David Semple: It is very simple to see where was the demand from investors. If you want that exposure to the strong increase of the tax expenditure taxes higher for Russian energy companies have made possible, but do not want to risk associated with major oil companies and gas, an ETF small-cap is a good alternative. And since the company-specific risk may be higher in Russia, a portfolio approach seems to agree many passive investors. UBS estimated last September that the relaunch of the Russia is now 7 to 8% of its domestic product gross. If you calculate the GDP with an average price of oil $75 per barrel, this stimulus comes to 100 billion dollars per year. It is all in the economy and is reflected in the low interest rates, increasing and more employees of public sector pensions. The Russia has won $ 1.5 trillion in exports of oil and natural gas from 2000 to 2010 and collected taxes worth a fair part of this.

Hope abroad: sprout in Italian film studio's decay

The usual.

At the reception of the Cinecittà, the legendary film Studio, flickered clips of "Death in Venice" and "La Dolce Vita" on a video monitor over the heads of the reception staff. Coltish free young people in Nike and Marcello Mastroianni sunglasses decanted from a school bus outside loose for a tour through the Studio back, where the Italian version of "Big Brother" is stuck.

This country has become recently an own reality show, as Italians often complain about. The situation is to come to the point where no one find it particularly odd seems the Prime Minister, as an Italian version of Miriam from forest hills or Dave from Harlem to call in the WFAN, regular phones to chat TV shows or complain about how the host is some Government representation to measure.

Not long ago, Mr Berlusconi, Giovanni Floris, hosts of "Ballarò" so far as to refuse the went call. Already he's turn had Silvio of the Chigi Palace, declared Mr Floris, and if the head of the Italian Government had to say something more, he was on the show in person come and say that it is welcome.

This passes now gallows comedy in the country of Plautus and Boccaccio, where pay Mr Berlusconi's administration, national arts budget and the Fund for Opera, music, theatre, film, to the endless away standard with lip-service to the culture of the country's pride and joy and economic engine.? The second anniversary of the earthquake, which devastated L'Aquila came and went in this month, and, shame, the formerly bustling and historical centre of the city is almost empty. A concert hall designed by Shigeru ban, the Japanese architect, open it on the anniversary, was again and again by the usual money and organizational afflictions delayed.

The conductor Riccardo Muti made news last month as during the premiere of "Nabucco" here in Rome, he led the audience in a spontaneous Encore "Va, Pensiero." ("O, my own country, so beautiful and lost" is the relevant documents.) The occasion was a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Italian unity, and the addition was the amount of protest against arts cuts and the country's General State of turmoil, Mr muti said then, to match the event "some of the Visconti film" Senso, "confirms that for Italian life has come, to imitate fiction."

Luchino the list goes on Visconti and his ilk, including Federico Fellini, Vittorio de SICA, Bernardo Bertolucci, William Wyler, Joseph L. mankiewicz, Martin Scorsese - and more - in the decades Cinecittà that storied was most film production centre in Europe, but until some weeks ago have an Italian landmark in the crisis, or so it was said. Without an incentive program of the friendly facilities abroad have to entice foreign filmmakers, said the Studio itself, if only to public sympathy for the sale of a Fellini's priceless props, to raise fast cash call.

The Government recently came through with a three year postponement, promised in the Act breaks tax to 25 percent of the money, to spend the foreign manufacturers on production here. This brings the Studio closer to that in Berlin, Prague, Budapest and London.

Still, a delay, such as in a film ends finally. Italy seems today not in the position, far in the future, whether backup for posterity his famous film center or preserve his crumbling architectural and archaeological heritage or consolidation of this increasingly vast, varied and unstoppable capital plan.

In other words, if I in stopped to see Maurizio Sperandini, Deputy general manager of Cinecittà, he fazed apparently not. Director of the production facilities and a 22-year veteran of the complex, he has been through many ups and deep, and he told me that he and his bosses with the three year contract were satisfied. He boasted annual income of $ 57 million doubled as Studio went private mid of 1990s, when it was on the verge of bankruptcy.

Founded by Mussolini to promote Italian cinema and fascist propaganda films, Cinecittà sitting on 99 acres of public land, joint-stock company used buildings and public tax credits depends on, but it is a private, profit-oriented company with a list of glittery investors. You are now 115 million consider an expansion $ to free parts of the property, a new includes complex of sorting soundstage, offices, a hotel, a gym and a restaurant, which Mr Sperandini said the Cinecittà competitors offer.

The 1930s Meanwhile rejects campus of ochre buildings of Gino Peressutti, an important work of the Italian modernist design, properly in a landscape of cypress trees, Palm trees and fiberglass trailer. Streets in the Forum there were from the Group of the "Rome," the defunct HBO series, the decrepit waterfront of 19 lower Manhattan from "Gangs of New York." On a soundstage where Fellini "Satyricon" shot and Wes Anderson shot "the life aquatic with Steve Zissou" dangling a spaghetti involvement of air-conditioning channels of silent catwalks. The other morning stylists were models for a fashion shoot from a fake old Colonnade, primping, where someone had parked a Renault.

"I would like to take you to the u-boot" proposed Mr. Sperandini Wizard, Francesca Rotondo, to not find contested Renault owners; and like a supernatural characters in "the adjustment Bureau", she opened a door on the set of a 14 Florentine Palazzo on weedy lot where meeting participants were collected, and the u boat of "U-571," that 2000 geschlummert in a film long on a German u boat,, white condom-shaped tent. Nearby, the young people from the school bus flirted, written and tried not to get bored look while waiting for on their applies which go in.

"We sell a mixture of past and future," is, as Mr Sperandini took the complaint as a filmmaker working in this place, where the glamour and Surrealism of Fellini have not yet evaporated, and the General State of madness - a charmed - magical witches, many of which - a microcosm of the Italy and a metaphor seems worn and rather somnolent for how, despite itself, thrive Italian anyway.

Some variations of Cinecittà's public private business model for the good or the bad, may ultimately prove to be a relief for other ailing cultural institutions. This is clearly the hope, Mr Berlusconi, the billionaire, who owns newspapers and television stations, including those which he sometimes when calling. Of course he has for more private control, perhaps as a way, his inexcusable cuts in the culture budget and the incompetence of his Government Management excuse them plea was.

But the story of Italy, as always, now is also one of the unlikely power and resourcefulness. Again and again, the country survived his self-inflicted disaster. It is a part of the lovable, incomparable beauty and attractiveness of the place. If I were made of the u-Bahn in the city, Mr Berlusconi have been hundreds of protesters posters mocking for his relationship with Karima el-Mahroug, the underage girl in question, which is the heart stealer of the Nom d ' art Ruby. She protested in the Piazza at the Pantheon and mixed with helpless Japanese and Chinese tourists.

It was the usual scene of chaos, joy, and complaints. A band anstimmte in the vicinity of the well. The Sun sank, casting shadows over the place.

This was Rome. And everyone was very happy.
