(Health.com) people who carry the genital herpes virus but no visible Symptome-- and about 10% of the time, a new study in the journal are may not even be aware that they are infected - still in the position of the viruses of the American Medical Association.
An estimated 16% of U.S. adults with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which can cause bumps, blisters or sores on the genitals and surrounding areas, along with pain and itching are infected.
But only about 10% to 25% of these people know that they carry the virus. While some infected people often have outbreaks, most symptoms have never and others have only one or two flare-ups.
Previous research has shown that people infected can pass the virus to someone else through genital contact with HSV-2, even if they have symptoms. The new students and-bisher-the largest of its kind - this risk helps quantify says Christine Johnston, m.d., one of the authors of the study and acting Assistant Professor of medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle.
"Lot of times people with HSV-2 are diagnosed by an antibody test and they don't know what to do with this information", says Johnston. "I think we have a number that we can tell people."

The study included 498 adults with healthy immune systems, which had a diagnosis of genital herpes or who tested positive for HSV-2. Every day for at least 30 days, participants examined themselves for symptoms and a swab of the genital secretions, that stored and tested in a laboratory were collected.
The 410 people with a history of herpes symptoms have been found, "The virus to 20% of the days be shed" for which they collected swabs, compared to 10% of the days for those who had never experience symptoms.
The asymptomatic people shared experience the same amount of virus, if they were shed as the symptomatic people, when they were no outbreak. (The amount of the virus increases if symptoms were present).
The 10% figure is an average Johnston of notes; The more common shed virus is some people while others are shed it less often. "People risk very differently to interpret," adds to it. "Some people feel how much is 10% and some people feel a 10% is low."
