The study included 498 adults with healthy immune systems, which had a diagnosis of genital herpes or who tested positive for HSV-2. Every day for at least 30 days, participants examined themselves for symptoms and a swab of the genital secretions, that stored and tested in a laboratory were collected.

The 410 people with a history of herpes symptoms have been found, "The virus to 20% of the days be shed" for which they collected swabs, compared to 10% of the days for those who had never experience symptoms.
