For the most part, expiration dates offer a safety net between fresh packaged meat and what is corrupted. However, corners cannot be cut always and dates can be spoofed, which can leave feeling to scandals that almost rotten one consumer. And that has no suspected sniff test carried out, on this forgotten Pack of chicken breast in the back of the refrigerator?

But everything, what second-guessing could be a thing of the past, now, as researchers in Munich, a new sensor-film for food packaging, the colour-have developed from yellow to blue, when food verdirbt-- changes.

State developed technologies EMFT, by researchers at the Fraunhofer research institution for modular solid the sensor-film directly on the inside of the food packaging can be integrated where it responds to biogenic amines. Amines are produced, the molecules when food-in particular meat and fish-disintegrate and responsible for the unpleasant smell.

When amines in the air within the new packaging will be released, dye in blue responds of the sensor film and the indicator changed.

"Reached a certain concentration range, the color change is clearly visible and takes over the task of warning the consumer," said scientist Anna Hezinger in a press release for EMFT. "In contrast to the expiration date, the information on the sensor-film not an estimate, but an actual control over the food itself based."

Scientists develop also sensor-film with a built-in module so employees in the food and packaging industry can directly test the freshness of the food products. The module would colour reaction lens analyze the sensor film and provide a more precise fresh air.
